Biography of Rachel Wiles Painter and Textile Artist
My great passion and main influence of my work are seascapes/landscapes, in particular the countryside of my home on the Norfolk and Suffolk boarder in the Waveney Valley.
I work with a wide range of mixed media, layering of acrylics, collage papers, found items from the subject area and a hint of gold leaf!
Using layers of glazes and some solid colours of paint, I lay a foundation to which I then distort and manipulate the surfaces and materials. I use a combination of techniques to scratch, rub, print, sand areas to give texture and detail.
These techniques also translate into my textile and embroidered pieces by layering of fabrics, manipulating them and embroidering to give areas of detail.
I work intuitively and experimentally not having any fixed or preconceived ideas with my aim purely to evoke the emotions felt of a place, the evocative colours and the atmospheric nature of the subject.
